How to download TikToks in HD 1080p (real quality, no upscale)
Let me be honest right up front: the maximum quality TikTok allows is 1080p. Anything past that is fake or a software upscale, and it looks worse than the original. In this guide I'll show you how to get that real maximum and explain why some TikToks look better than others.
The truth about TikTok video quality
When you upload a video to TikTok, the platform re-compresses it. Yes, even if you filmed it in 4K with the best camera in the world. TikTok processes it to serve millions of users across different networks and devices.
The ceiling is 1080p Full HD (1920×1080). What you see in the app will NEVER be better than that, no matter how it was filmed.
Why do some TikToks look worse?
Several reasons, from most to least common:
- Uploaded from an old phone: older cameras film at 720p max
- Slow upload connection: TikTok compresses harder to finish the upload
- Screen capture: many TikToks are screen recordings or reposts — they went through double compression
- Heavy effects: filters and AR drop the final quality
How to download in real 1080p with TikSavr
1. Copy the TikTok link
On the video, tap Share (the arrow) and choose Copy link.
2. Paste it in TikSavr
Go to tiksavr.com, paste the link in the main input and tap Search video.
3. Choose 1080p
Several quality options show up: 1080p, 720p, 480p, and MP3. If the creator uploaded in high resolution, 1080p Full HD will be available. If they only uploaded in 720p, that's the max option.
4. Download
Tap Download. The file saves as tiksavr_title.mp4 in the chosen quality.
How to check quality before downloading
In TikSavr's modal, we show the resolution of each available option. If only 720p and lower show up, that means the video does NOT exist in 1080p on TikTok's servers. There's no way to download something TikTok doesn't have.
Is upscaling afterward worth it?
There are apps that promise to "improve" video quality with AI (upscaling). For personal curiosity it can work, but keep in mind:
- They massively increase file size
- They invent details that weren't there originally
- They can introduce weird artifacts in fast-motion scenes
- They take minutes to process each video
My advice: if you need real high quality, ask the creator for the original file. That will always beat any upscale.
Approximate sizes per quality
- 1080p: 8-15 MB per minute
- 720p: 4-8 MB per minute
- 480p: 2-4 MB per minute
- MP3: 500 KB - 1.5 MB per minute
If you're archiving lots of TikToks and space matters, 720p gives you almost the same visual quality at half the weight.
Frequently asked questions
Are all TikToks in 1080p?
No. Max quality depends on how the creator uploaded the video. Some are 720p or even 540p if filmed with older phones or uploaded over slow connections.
Can you upscale a TikTok 720p to 1080p?
No, that would fake the image with software upscaling. We deliver the file exactly as it lives on TikTok's servers.
Why does TikTok compress my videos so much on upload?
To reduce size and serve billions of videos without saturating the network. It's a tradeoff between quality and app performance.
Is there 4K on TikTok?
Not officially. TikTok caps uploads at 1080p maximum, so the quality ceiling for any video is 1080p.
