Can you download TikToks from private accounts?
One of the most common questions we get: "can I download TikToks from private accounts?". The short answer is no, and in this article I'll explain exactly why, which tools are lying, and the only legitimate way to do it.
What is a private TikTok account?
When a user marks their account as private, all their videos become hidden from the public. Only people they approve as followers can see them. It's a deliberate privacy decision — they want ONLY those people to access the content.
This means private videos are NOT available at TikTok's public URLs. If you try to open a private video link without being an approved follower, TikTok shows you a "video unavailable" message.
Why doesn't TikSavr download private videos?
Same technical reason: TikSavr's server accesses the video using exactly the same public URL you would. If you can't see the video because it's private, our server can't either.
This is by design. A tool that could bypass that privacy would have to:
- Log in with an account that does follow the private user
- Have access to credentials that don't belong to it
- Violate TikTok's terms of service
- Violate data privacy laws in most countries
We do none of that. We process public TikTok links, period.
Sites promising private downloads are scams
Search "download private TikTok" on Google and you'll find dozens of sites promising to do it. All of them, without exception, are scams. The pattern is always the same:
- They ask you to log in with your TikTok account "to verify"
- They steal credentials and, with luck, only show invasive ads
- They show surveys or app installs to "unlock"
- In the end they download nothing and your account is compromised
I'm telling you straight: NEVER enter your TikTok credentials on any site that isn't tiktok.com. It's the most common way for accounts to get stolen.
What if I DO follow the private account?
Even then, you can't use external tools to download. TikTok's system doesn't expose those videos at public URLs even to your followers. To view them, you have to be logged in inside the app.
But there's a legitimate alternative: screen recording built into the phone.
Screen recording on iPhone
- Go to Settings → Control Center and add the Screen Recording button
- Open TikTok and load the private video
- Swipe down the Control Center and tap the red recording button
- Play the video fully
- Stop recording. The file saves to Photos
Screen recording on Android
- Pull down the notification panel
- Find the "Screen recorder" icon (Samsung, Xiaomi, Google Pixel ship it built in)
- Start it and open TikTok
- Play the private video
- Stop the recording
This records what you see on screen, so quality matches the played video. Usually 720p or 1080p, which is perfectly usable.
What if I need higher quality?
The only way is to ask the creator directly. Send them a message, explain what you need it for, and if they agree, they can send it via iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, or any messaging app.
This is also the ethical option: the creator made their account private precisely because they don't want that content redistributed. Respecting that decision is the right move.
Summary
- TikSavr: public videos only. That's the system's rule.
- Sites promising private downloads: 100% scams. Don't use any.
- Screen recording: the technical option for videos you DO have access to.
- Ask the creator: the ethical and highest-quality option.
Frequently asked questions
Is there any legal way to download private TikToks?
Yes, one: have the account owner send or share it with you directly. Any other route means accessing content without permission and violates TikTok's terms.
Can TikSavr download private videos?
No. TikSavr only processes links to public videos. If the video is from a private account, not even our system can see it.
Do websites claiming to download private TikToks work?
No. Sites promising that are scams: they ask you to log in with your account, steal your credentials, and at best download nothing.
What can I do if I need a private TikTok?
If you have authorized access, screen-record the phone using the native iOS or Android feature. It's the only legitimate option outside asking the creator.
