How to download TikTok Stories (temporary stories)
TikTok Stories are a more casual, temporary version of TikTok content. They last only 24 hours and then disappear — perfect for everyday moments, but frustrating when you see something good and want to save it. In this guide I'll explain what can and can't be done to keep Stories.
What are TikTok Stories?
TikTok launched Stories as a response to Instagram Stories and Snapchat. Key traits:
- They only last 24 hours
- They show up at the top of the feed with circular icons
- Typically more casual, unedited content
- Creators use them for quick announcements or "behind the scenes"
The hard part: time is running
Unlike a normal TikTok that can stay live for years, a Story is ephemeral content on purpose. If you see a good one today at 10 AM, by 10 AM tomorrow it won't be accessible to anyone except its creator.
That changes the download strategy:
- While the Story is active: TikSavr can process the URL (if it's public)
- After 24h: the Story has expired and nobody can recover it
So my advice: if you see a Story you want to save, do it now.
How to download an active Story
Option 1: TikSavr (if it has a public URL)
- Tap the Story in TikTok to open it
- Tap the Share button
- Choose Copy link
- Paste it in tiksavr.com and download as normal
Important: not all Stories allow Share → Copy link. If the creator disabled that option, the button won't appear. In that case, use option 2.
Option 2: Screen recording
This ALWAYS works because it records what you see:
iPhone
- Activate screen recording (Control Center)
- Open the Story on TikTok
- Let it play fully (Stories last 5-15 seconds)
- Stop recording
- Trim the video in Photos to keep just the Story
Android
- Start the screen recorder from notifications
- Open the Story
- Wait for it to play through
- Stop recording
- Edit the video with Gallery or any editing app
Special case: Stories from accounts you follow
If you follow an account and see their Story, sometimes TikTok generates a public URL for the Story that lasts the 24 hours. You can copy that URL and paste it in TikSavr.
If the account is private and only followers can see their Stories, there's no public URL and TikSavr can't process it. Only option is screen recording.
Does the creator find out?
TikTok shows the creator who viewed their Story (viewer list, similar to Instagram). But:
- It does NOT notify them if you screen-recorded
- It does NOT notify them if you downloaded with an external tool
- It only knows you were among the viewers
Snapchat does notify screenshots, but TikTok doesn't. As of writing this article, TikTok doesn't implement that feature.
Quality of downloaded Stories
Stories tend to be lower quality than main TikTok videos. Creators record them quickly, in-app, with less care for quality. Expect:
- 720p max on most Stories
- 480p if the creator has a slow connection
- Audio compressed to 64 kbps generally
Use cases
- Important announcements: save a Story where a creator announced something (discount, event, collab)
- Reminders: if they recommended a product, save the Story with the name
- Visual inspiration: archive Stories with good style or reference
- Personal backup: save your own Stories before TikTok deletes them
Frequently asked questions
How long do TikTok Stories last?
24 hours. After that they disappear from the public feed and only the creator can see them in their personal archive.
Can TikSavr download Stories?
If the Story has a public URL and hasn't expired yet, yes. Once the 24h window passes, it's no longer available to anyone, including our system.
How do I save a Story quickly before it expires?
Use the phone's screen recorder while it plays. It's the safest option when a Story is about to expire.
Does the creator see who downloaded their Story?
TikTok shows the creator who VIEWED their Story (viewers list), but does not detect screen recordings or external downloads.
